Our vocabulary words for this week are:
Empresario-a person who had been granted the right to settle on land in exchange for recruiting others to come to Texas to settle on land.
Karankawa- a tribe of native Americans on the Gulf Coast that raided Stephen F. Austin’s settlers. Known for being extremely aggressive and very tall, with men over 6′ 6” and women over 6′.
Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna-dictator of Mexico who marched into Texas to stop a rebellion, won at the Alamo, and was defeated at the Battle of San Jacinto.
Stephen F. Austin-first successful empresario who brought 300 families to settle Tejas(Texas). Also known as “The father of Texas”.
Sam Houston- General who led the Texan forces who defeated Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto. 1st President of the Texas Republic.
Alamo-a Spanish Catholic mission that Texian forces fortified after capturing it from Mexican forces. Santa Anna’s troops eventually defeated the Texians there and killed every man who stayed and fought.
Texian- American settlers of Mexican Texas and later the Republic of Texas.
